Wisdom teeth removal may sound like a scary procedure. However, it is a necessary one when it comes to maintaining your oral health.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

History has taught us that wisdom teeth were once replacement teeth for our early ancestors. As their teeth fell out, the wisdom teeth would grow in and replace them. Thanks to modern dentistry, however, our mouths no longer need these replacement teeth. Because our teeth tend to last much longer, wisdom teeth have no space in which to grow. This can result in several issues.

  • Inflammation and infection: Growing teeth often cause minor inflammation. However, when wisdom teeth struggle to erupt, this can be more severe. Impacted wisdom teeth, in particular, can cause continuous discomfort. As they continue to inflame the gums, an infection can set it and cause more serious dental issues, including gingivitis and periodontitis.
  • Overcrowding: Your mouth is perfectly formed to fit 32 adult teeth. Wisdom teeth add four more large teeth, leading to overcrowding. (This is particularly true when your wisdom teeth grow in crooked or sideways, as is often the case.) Not only can this be painful, it can cause your other teeth to start to turn or become misaligned.
  • Damage to nearby teeth: Overcrowding leads to damages as well. The pressure of a growing wisdom tooth can wreak havoc on the teeth that surround them. Misalignment, cracking, and irritations with the surrounding teeth are common results of budding wisdom teeth.
  • Cysts or tumors: Cysts are also potential issues. Tumors, while less common, are also possible. These painful sacs of fluid or soft pulp can make things like eating and talking uncomfortable.  Cysts can easily become infected and are known to weaken the jaw.
  • Difficulty brushing and flossing: It can be difficult to reach wisdom teeth. This means routine oral care, like brushing and flossing, can be much harder. Failure to properly care for these teeth can lead to tooth decay and other issues.
  • Pain: The pain associated with growing or impacted wisdom teeth is notorious. Not only can the site of your wisdom teeth ache, but pains can be felt throughout your mouth.

To help prevent these issues, dentists recommend wisdom teeth removal. This helps to relieve the pressure created by your wisdom teeth and lessen the chance or permanent damages.
