Sedation Dentistry in Arroyo Grande

Sedation dentistry has been the answer that many patients have been waiting for, and innovations are happening every single day. Phobia of the dentist is being slowly minimalized, and it’s clear to see why: key results with minimal to no associated pain or discomfort. But how do we get there? Sedation dentistry utilizes pain-reducing medication that does exactly as described, which can make a tremendous difference in every aspect of your experience.

Different Types of Sedation Dentistry

Tailored to your specific procedure or expected level of pain/discomfort, you may be given various options. These can include the following

  • Minimal Sedation: You’re awake during the procedure, but extremely relaxed.
  • Moderate Sedation: The perfect level between consciousness and extreme relaxation. You may slur your words when you try to speak.
  • Deep Sedation: This is the cusp of unconsciousness; you’ll be heavily sedated, and most likely won’t even remember what you’re doing in the chair.
  • General Anesthesia: You’re out completely while the dentist performs the procedure.

How Is Sedation Dentistry Administered?

Depending on your sedation type, you’ll be outfitted with a few options. Your ability to choose is designed to give you the utmost levels of comfort in your procedure, while ultimately sedating any pain or discomfort you may feel. The most that you’ll feel is pressure.

Nitrous Oxide

Better known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an inhalant, and designed to bring you a feeling of pure relaxation, and you may even feel a bit goofy, which is perfectly normal. Your dentist will administer the amount of nitrous oxide you receive, and you can feel these effects for about twenty to thirty minutes post-op.

Oral Sedatives

These are usually taken an hour or so before the procedure, and have moderate effects. Depending on your procedure, these same types of pills may be prescribed to you for at-home pain relief once you leave the office.

IV Sedation

Quick and a pinprick—this is a fast way to get the ball rolling, but it also allows your dentist to increase or decrease how much pain relief you receive dependent upon your own personal needs.
